All three major averages closed higher for the week, driven by softer retail sales and consumer price data for April. And the data has been mostly good, with 78% reporting a positive earnings surprise and 60% delivering a positive sales surprise. But we will get earnings from three portfolio companies, including one of our two "own, don't trade" stocks. In the week ahead, three portfolio companies will report results, while it will be fairly slow for economic data, except for a couple of housing reports. Earnings : After a week without earnings from any Club stocks, we'll get three this coming week.

Noah Berlatsky Noah BerlatskyAlex Garland’s “Civil War” has mostly been discussed as a reflection of, and a warning about, America’s current partisan divisions. Unlike the actual US Civil War, this one doesn’t seem to have any particular racial or racist connotations. But it’s the same kind of cop out that powers most of Hollywood’s most iconic Vietnam war movies. Hollywood Vietnam war movies generally aren’t about whether America did the right thing, nor are they about how America’s choices affected people in Vietnam. Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" (1987), starring Matthew Modine as Joker, is based on the events of the Vietnam war.

CNN —The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is leveraging the attention on Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated film “Oppenheimer” in an attempt to elevate the conversation about nuclear threat. In the run-up to Sunday night’s Academy Awards, the organization is launching a “Make Nukes History” campaign Wednesday in Los Angeles. “We want to raise our voices to remind people that while Oppenheimer is history, nuclear weapons are not,” the group writes in their letter. And political will is created when people demand it.”Cillian Murphy (as J. Robert Oppenheimer) and writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of "Oppenheimer." All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood’s actors have voted to ratify the deal with studios that ended their strike after nearly four months, leaders announced Tuesday. The approval of the three-year contract from the members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists was no certainty, with some prominent members voicing dissent on the deal for which the union leaders bargained. But the outcome is a major relief for SAG-AFTRA leaders and an entertainment industry that is attempting to return to normal after months of labor strife. Political Cartoons View All 1283 ImagesThose leaders had freed actors to return to work, declaring the strike over as soon as the tentative deal was struck Nov. 8. “It is purposefully vague and demands union members to release their autonomy....

New York CNN —Members of SAG-AFTRA, the Hollywood actors union, have ratified a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents major studios and streamers, the union said on Tuesday. Hollywood actors and producers reached the tentative deal on November 8, after tumultuous negotiations throughout the year. The actors union strike ended on midnight after the deal was tentatively reached, tentatively concluding one of the most disruptive strikes in Hollywood’s history. But the actors’ contract negotiations didn’t last long, breaking down on October 11 before returning later in the month. On Wednesday, November 8, the actors union announced they had reached a tentative agreement, allowing actors to soon return to work.

Criticisms of small caps abound, though Hartman doesn't see any of them as valid reasons to ignore the group entirely. But to Hartman, those perceived flaws can actually be sound reasons to invest in small caps. "In the small-cap and micro-cap market, there's a lot of volatility," Hartman said in a recent interview with Insider. The small-cap fund also seemingly has no limit on the number of stocks it can hold. Investors can play the industrials sector with commercial aerospace stocks, Hartman said.

Rosie O'Donnell says she was asked about running for SAG-AFTRA president in 2021. She told The Wall Street Journal she didn't want to run, but suggested Fran Drescher instead. Rosie O'Donnell told The Wall Street Journal that the SAG-AFTRA had been in touch before its most recent election in 2021 to ask if she was interested in running as president. She said she wasn't interested but suggested they contact her friend Drescher instead, because of her "Norma Rae-like ability to inspire." She can succinctly choose the words that are going to have the most impact in the smallest amount of time," O'Donnell told the newspaper.
